BEHF Architects transforms Retail Centre MEDIA MARKT in Klagenfurt
The architects’ task has been to renovate an existing building and create a new retail experience around the centre. The building has been partially demolished and rebuilt. The area of about 4,900 square metres has been reduced to 4,434 square metres.
The design strategy has been to develop a clear spatial structure and increase the visibility of the centre. The entire outdoor space is generously enriched with walkways, park-like areas towards Friedensgasse and comfortable parking spaces. All shops are oriented towards the parking spaces. A wide, pleasant and covered promenade, which looks like a floating advertising space, is the main connection to the inviting shops. The design of the centre improves orientation as well as clarity of the central entrance area which is now oriented towards the visitors. Thus, the functional quality of the building is increased.
The entrance area is enclosed with an all-glass facade. An advertising box, which is also used as a canopy, is added above. The supporting structure of the advertising box is made as a steel construction. This is clad with a color-coated metal facade in the CI colors of the main user (Media Markt). The underside of the advertising box is painted white. On the facade, self-luminous, advertising letters are placed.
BEHF’s intervention on the existing building has resulted in a dynamic and energetic ambience which enhances the shopping experience and welcoming feel.
